Serbia is negotiating with Russia to extend its natural gas supply contract, which is set to expire in March. The country aims to maintain volumes similar to the current agreement with Gazprom PJSC, leveraging its strong relations with Moscow, according to Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin.
Moldova has appealed for financial assistance from Western nations due to concerns that Gazprom PJSC may halt natural gas supplies to the breakaway Transnistria region. This pro-Russian territory relies on gas from Gazprom, which is transported through Ukraine, making it vulnerable as the transit agreement between Moscow and Kyiv nears expiration. A disruption in gas supply would significantly impact Moldova, as Transnistria generates electricity for the entire country.
Gazprom PJSC is preparing for a potential complete halt of natural gas flows through Ukraine next year. The company is considering a scenario where no gas transits via Ukraine after the current deal expires at the end of the year, although these plans are still pending management approval.
Austria's energy chief stated that the decision for OMV AG to exit its long-term gas contract with Gazprom lies with the company's executives and shareholders, as the risk of blackmail over supplies has diminished. The contract, established in 2018, extends until 2040 and has come under scrutiny following OMV's €230 million arbitration win against Gazprom, which halted fuel deliveries in response to the settlement claim.
OMV AG has secured a €230 million ($243 million) award from Gazprom PJSC following an arbitration ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce concerning gas deliveries in 2022. The dispute arose from "irregular" German gas supplies prior to September 2022, which may impact future procurements from Russia.
